How To: Change Your Game Center ID

Game Center is a pretty awesome application thats built right into all iOS versions 4.1 and above. It lets you track your achievements in a game, see leaderboards, compare scores with friends, and even play head-to-head in multiplayer games with your friends. However, sometimes with all the different username mumbojumbo, you forget what your friend’s username is. On the iPad, sometimes it will show your friend’s real name and it will on all friend invites but most people use Game Center on their iPhone/iPod Touch.

So I’ve had a lot of people ask me, “Is there a way I can change my name on Game Center?” I wasn’t really sure if you could so I decided to figure out how to do it, if you could at all. I was skeptical that Apple would even let you change your Game Center name. Suprisingly, it’s very simple and can be done from inside the app.

 How To

Step 1: Open up the app. At the bottom is your Apple ID on a banner. Tap that banner.

Step 2: Clicking on your Apple ID banner will open this pop-up menu. When this pops up, tap “View Account”

Step 3: It will ask you for your password just for verification, go ahead and enter it.

Step 4: After you enter your password a menu will pop up that allows you to toggle things such as “Allow Game Invites” and “Find Me By Email” You can also change and enter new email addresses by which people can find you. Scroll down and you’ll see an option to change your “Game Center Identity” or nickname. Just click the box and enter your desired Game Center ID. I suggest using your name or initials that way people will know it’s you. Then just tap “Done” at the top, and you’re finished! Easy.

[Another option in the menu is to “Edit Account Info”. Tapping on that will bring up a page that allows you to edit your first and last name(what show’s up on friend requests on Game Center), your Apple ID and password, your question and answer to verify your identity if you forget your password, your date of birth, and toggle subscribing to emails from Apple.]
