Microsoft Kinect Becomes Fastest Selling Gadget Ever
The sales of the Microsoft Xbox 360 Kinect have surprised everyone, with the latest figures suggesting that the sales rate has surpassed the iPad as well as the Wii. Microsoft is well on it s way to the goal of 5 million units by the end of the year with 2.5 million units being sold in 25 days.
In comparison, the iPad sold 4.5 million units in 90 days, which is a pretty impressive feat considering the current economic climate, but with Microsoft selling 2.5 million Kinect units in 25 days, it will take less than two months to reach what the iPad did. Currently, the Kinect is selling at an average of 100,000 per day versus 50,000 per day for the iPad. The Playstation Move has not sold nearly as well, with only 1 million units in its first month.
For those not familiar with Kinect, it is, the first controller free gaming and entertainment system that lets the user control games, music, movies and TV with gestures and their voice. Some stores have added a time limit to those who want to try out the device because kids and parents alike have spent hours playing in the store.
Numerous retailers including Walmart, Target, and GameStop have been selling out of the Kinect add on for the Xbox 360 on their stores as well as online. As soon as the stores stock their shelves with Kinect, they sell out again. However, Microsoft has been rolling out shipments of the product almost nonstop to keep up with the current demand.
I will be surprised if Microsoft doesn t meet their goal of 5 million units by the end of the year.
